Scammers stole $1.6 million in cryptocurrencies thanks to fake celebrity streamers

Group-IB company, which is one of the leading organizations for detecting and combating crimes in the network, reported about a new wave of scams related to cryptocurrencies. The company's press office shared details with journalists.

According to Group-IB officials, another crime was committed by criminals via YouTube video hosting. Using and editing fragments of video clips of influential personalities in the crypto-sphere, such as the founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin, the scammers inserted them into their streams. During the broadcasts, they promised viewers to double their cryptocurrency savings. To do this, people had to send their assets to wallets indicated by the streamers.

It should be noted that through the use of video with Buterin, the criminals managed to attract to their stream about 165 thousand viewers. A part of people believed in promises of easy gain and transferred their assets to the criminals.

Group-IB specialists detected another scheme targeting NFT holders. They were offered to go to a specified site, where they could allegedly get a special token. In order to do this, users had to provide personal data from their account. It is noted that the total amount of stolen funds amounted to about $1.6 million.
