FBI confiscates $500,000 in cryptocurrencies from DPRK hackers

American authorities managed to seize from hackers from North Korea about half a million dollars in cryptocurrencies, stolen earlier with the help of malicious software. This was reported the day before by the Department of Justice of the United States.

As stated by the deputy head of the Department, Lisa Monaco, confiscated money is gradually returning to the victims of cyber attacks. So far, the work is being conducted with individuals and companies in Kansas and Colorado, she said.

Computer systems of American citizens and organizations were attacked in 2021. The FBI investigated the crime and came to the conclusion that hackers from North Korea were involved in the theft of funds. At the same time, the stolen money was seized from the accounts of Chinese residents, who, the FBI said, played the role of "money launderers". The cooperation of U.S. law enforcement agencies made it possible to trace the cryptocurrency transactions and reach the wallets of the hackers.

Monaco appealed to victims of financial fraud to complain to law enforcement if this has not yet been done. According to her, stolen money can indeed be recovered, but lately the process has become more labor-intensive.
