Ex-girlfriend of crypto-enthusiast John McAfee says businessman faked his death

The developer of the McAfee antivirus program and crypto-enthusiast famous for his betting John McAfee is alive, not hanged in his cell in a Spanish prison. The version about staged death of businessman was voiced by his ex-girlfriend in the documentary film from Netflix.

According to the official version, in 2020, McAfee was detained in Spain for not paying taxes to the United States, and later committed suicide in prison hours after being allowed to extradite him to the States. Samantha Herrera, a friend of the deceased, believes McAfee managed to fake his own death and secretly moved to Texas.

According to her, her ex-boyfriend called her two weeks after the announcement of his death. McAfee was already in Texas and admitted that he had managed to bribe those responsible to declare him dead. Herrera reported that McAfee had called her to run away with him, and that only 3 people in the world knew of the businessman's true whereabouts.

John McAfee gained his popularity in the cryptocurrency community in 2017 after publicly betting that bitcoin would cross the $500,000 per unit mark in 3 years. Later, the businessman continued to raise the bet, reaching $1 million.
