Xbox head compares metaverses to regular video games

Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's Xbox gaming division, expressed his opinion on metaworlds and pointed out the main weakness of games based on the Play-to-Earn model. The interview with the top manager was organized by Bloomberg.

According to Spencer, there's nothing fundamentally new about the concept of meta-universes, because regular video games have provided similar experiences for the past three decades. Almost all projects allow gamers to immerse themselves in a three-dimensional world in which communication and gameplay experiences take place. The most ordinary races are as good as the metaverse in this respect, Spencer believes.

He also said he sees no surprise in the lack of understanding the difference between meta universes and familiar games. The same avatars, shared playspace and remote access to the virtual world are already available to gamers. Nevertheless, Spencer did not deny that Microsoft is interested in developing virtual worlds, including for commercial use.

Finally, Spencer said he still looks at Play-to-Earn games with caution. It's all about the growth of
speculation in the market for non-fungible tokens (NFT). At the same time, such projects can be very useful, he concluded.
